Orlando: Choosing the Future after the Great Recession
The City of Orlando will convene a half-day meeting on May 18, 2011 titled “Orlando: Choosing the Future after the Great Recession.” Partners include the Lou Frey Institute of Politics and Government, University of Central Florida, the Reubin O’D. Askew Institute on Politics and Society, University of Florida, the Florida League of Cities and the Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation . The purpose of the meeting is to explore strategies the city might pursue in strengthening its community identity and making its economy more inclusive, competitive, diverse, and less vulnerable to future downturns. To set the broader context from the national perspective, Greg Ip, the U.S. Economics Editor for the Economist, will be the keynote speaker. Two panel discussions with audience exchanges will follow Mr. Ip’s presentation. The first panel will explore what Orlando has learned from this recession and the second will discuss various strategic initiatives to revitalize Orlando’s economies and barriers to realizing that goal. The meeting will conclude with a facilitated discussion about pursuing a strategic plan for Orlando.
