Programs for 2010 and beyond:
1. FLORIDA: CHOOSING THE FUTURE, September 23, 2010
In August, 2010, the Askew Institute, together with the Florida Humanities Council and the Fred Friendly organization at Columbia University, taped a program for PBS on the subject of “Florida: Choosing the Future.” Thirteen leading Floridians discussed Florida and its future with Arthur Miller of Harvard University and New York University serving as moderator. The program will be aired on PBS on September 23, 2010.
2. Regional Programs for 2010 – 2012
Following the airing of this PBS program, the Askew Institute is in the process of developing plans to co-host a series of regional programs in the state on the regional economies, the impact of the recession on them, and their plans for a post-recession economy. As of now, we are planning a program with Mayor Pam Iorio and the Tampa Bay Region on October 22, 2010 entitled, “The Tampa Bay Region and the Post-Recession Economy.” Additionally, the Askew Institute is in discussion with the University of North Florida and the DuPont Foundation on a program examining the Northeast Florida economy in January of 2011. Both these gatherings will use the PBS documentary, “Florida: Choosing the Future,” to launch a dialogue about the Tampa Bay Region and the Northeast Florida Region and their respective economies. The program in Jacksonville is tentatively planned for January of 2011. Also partnering with the Askew Institute in both programs is the Florida League of Cities and its Director Mike Sittig, and the Bob Graham Center at the University of Florida. Additionally, the Department of Political Science at the University of North Florida is collaborating with us on the Northeast Florida program.
The Institute is also planning similar programs in greater Miami and greater Orlando for 2011 and 2012.
